Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society

Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society

About

The ACHS is a local non-profit dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich and complex 260-plus year history of the Albemarle-Charlottesville area. We are committed to informing, inspiring, and bringing together all people; providing a safe and empathetic space for the exploration of our shared and distinct pasts. Our work is grounded in a belief in the worth and dignity of every human being, and that everyone has a unique and powerful story to tell. We value discovery, creativity, integrity, and diversity. We believe that history is meant to be learned from and that it has the potential to promote mutual understandings, build broader communities, and foster a more enlightened future.

The Society strives to accomplish this mission through a variety of public programs, including walking tours of Downtown Charlottesville, exhibits, publications, lectures, oral history collection, various educational programs, and operating Hatton Ferry. The Society's research library contains over 2,000 books and bound periodicals, as well as photographs, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, newspapers and vertical files relating to the history of our community. The Society's museum collection contains over 1,500 artifacts of historical significance to Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. No Admission Charge. Inquires can be sent to info@albemarlehistory.org.
