A Bridge to Revolution: Natural Bridge's 250th Commemoration

A Bridge to Revolution: Natural Bridge

About

A future president looked out over the edge of the 200-foot tall arch and marveled at the beauty of the natural world; he knew then that generations to come had to be able to feel the same awe he did in the face of the "most sublime of Nature's works."

July 5th, 2024 marks 250 years since Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Natural Bridge, setting the stage for the Bridge to be preserved in its natural state for all to experience. For all that time, through dozens of owners, one thing has remained: the preservation of the natural appearance of the Bridge.

Join park rangers, local officials, historians, and other guests as they share what this day meant for the Natural Bridge, for a young Thomas Jefferson just two years before the American Revolution, and what it means for its future.

A recognition ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the Natural Bridge. Bizzee B's BBQ will be on site offering up 4th of July cookout style food for purchase. Talks by historians and art historians will take place at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m., and rangers will be performing short programs throughout the day.

For the general public, A Bridge to Revolution is free to attend with the purchase of admission. This program is presented by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250), Rockbridge Historical Society and Lexington & Rockbridge Area Tourism.
