Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design

Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design

About

May 11, 2024 - January 5, 2025

From "Amistad" and "Roots" to Marvel Studios' "Black Panther," view more than 60 iconic costume designs by two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, whose work has defined the style of the Afrofuturism movement. Glimpse powerful pieces for film and television such as Malcom X, Selma, and Do the Right Thing. Exclusive to Jamestown Settlement, Carter's designs converge with historical fashion of the 1600s and 1700s to transcend time periods through a unique comparison of styles and dress, from bodices and breeches to tailored suits and heroic feats in fashion.

From humble roots in Massachusetts with Virginia connections as a Hampton University graduate, Carter has helped bring Black history to life for almost 40 years and defined the style of the Afrofuturism movement. Through her work in film, television and theater, Carter has earned 70 credits and collaborated with prolific directors, including Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler. Carter's art adds dimensionality, flair and culture to the characters she envisions, giving power to the incredible actors who wear her designs. Her vibrancy and attention to detail in costuming is integral to translating stories of race, politics and culture to the big screen.

The special exhibition is included with Jamestown Settlement admission: $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for ages 6-12. Dominion Energy is presenting sponsor of the special exhibition with additional support from James City County.
