About
Grayson County is a mountain community, having within its boundaries Whitetop Mountain, Buck Mountain, and the highest peak in Virginia Mountain Rogers, with an elevation of 5,720 feet. It also contains the second oldest river in the world; the New River in earlier years known as Woods River.
Grayson County was formed from Wythe County in 1792. Named for William Grayson, a delegate to the Continental Congress and one of the first two United States Senators for Virginia.
The Grayson County Tourism and the Grayson County Historical Society are both situated in the Historical 1908 Courthouse, which functions as the Art & Cultural Center of Grayson County, Virginia. The Courthouse is home to several facilities such as the Crossroads Museum, the Baldwin Auditorium, The Tourist Information Center, The Tourism Department Offices, and The Grayson County Historical Society (office and conference room). The Grayson County Historical Society collaborates with Matthew’s Living History Farm, a non-profit organization whose aim is to preserve the cultural heritage of upper New River Valley circa 1900.ley circa 1900.
