Talking History Series: Hodinösŷö:nih Ways of Belief and the Handsome Lake Religion

About

As part of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Talking History Series, “Hodinösŷö:nih Ways of Belief and the Handsome Lake Religion” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, will feature Jamie Jacobs, a citizen of the Tonawanda Band of Seneca in western New York and managing curator for the Rock Foundation collections at the Rochester Museum.

Jacobs will examine the ceremonial cycle of the Hodinösŷö:nih (Iroquois) people and how their ceremonies and religion were impacted by the coming of colonialism. The presentation will highlight the Seneca prophet, Handsome Lake, and his “Kaliwihyo,” known as the “Good Message,” and its influence as he guided his people through a tumultuous period of change in the early 19th century.

Admission is free with advance registration recommended. Learn more at jyfmuseums.org/lectures.
