Studley Cemetery Marker Dedication

Studley Cemetery Marker Dedication

About

On September 13, at 10 a.m., a marker will be dedicated at the Studley cemetery, 9477 Studley Farms Drive in Studley. Patrick Henry was born at Studley. The Old Studley/Lyons Cemetery has recently emerged as a result of historical research. It is a registered historic site and rests on private property. It has been approved for a Virginia Historical Highway Marker.

The Studley marker recognizes significant Colonial leaders who ultimately became Revolutionary Patriots. The cemetery is the final resting place of Dr. Thomas Chrystie, Col. John Syme, and Judge Peter Lyons as well as Patrick Henry’s grandson, William Henry Roane, distinguished member of Congress. There are approximately 45 burials on site, and the cemetery has not been known to be an active burial site since 1845.

These individuals and many others emerged as leaders in the transformation of American belief about loyalty to The King of England. Slowly they and others led the emergence of a new and significant movement that encouraged thought about a new nation that would be independent of the Monarchy. America has a singular uniqueness today thanks to early colonists’ ability to articulate new notions of the rights of individuals. The Studley Cemetery marker identifies four courageous American leaders, buried in the old cemetery, whose valiant stories are rarely, if ever, told.

Our honored guest will be Mr. Winston Cochrane, direct descendant of Col. John Syme, the first known owner of Studley and builder of the mansion where Patrick Henry was born in 1736.

The program will be brief. Parking will be monitored. There is no charge. You are invited to bring lawn chairs if desired.
