Race to the Dan Preservation Project

Race to the Dan Preservation Project

About

The Race to the Dan, fought in early 1781, was a pivotal Revolutionary War campaign between American Major General Nathanael Greene and British Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. This campaign across the North Carolina Piedmont ultimately led to Cornwallis’ surrender at Yorktown later that year, marking a turning point in the American Revolution.

Join SWCA Environmental Consultants and the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources in preserving the Race to the Dan, a key campaign in the American Revolution. Major General Nathanael Greene’s strategic retreat changed the course of history, leading to the British surrender at Yorktown. Your input can help us uncover new stories and commemorate these events for future generations.

This initiative is part of the larger America 250 commemoration and is funded by a grant from the American Battlefield Trust in partnership with the National Park Service. DNCR aims to develop “robust, statewide programs across all 100 counties, uncovering new histories from stories we thought we knew.”
