Commissioned by Robert "King" Carter and completed in 1735, Christ Church is the finest and best preserved parish church from colonial Virginia. The church is a National Historic Landmark and one of America's great buildings. It retains most of its original elements, including its molded-brick doorways, classical entablature, high-backed pews, triple-deck pulpit, stone pavers, and baptismal font. The elaborately carved tombs of Robert Carter and his two wives stand in the churchyard. The site includes an interactive, kid-friendly museum; attractive gift shop; research room; and a conference/education center. Special family-friendly educational programs, living history, community events and musical performances take place throughout the year. Since 1958, the Foundation for Historic Christ Church has led preservation, research and interpretation of the site.

Researchers who show up without an appointment may not be able to access the archives or meet with volunteers and staff who can assist them, so please contact us in advance.
