Chrysler Museum of Art

Chrysler Museum of Art

About

Home to over 30,000 works of art from around the world and an extensive glass art collection of 10,000 pieces spanning over 3,000 years,, the Chrysler Museum of Art is a true statement to Norfolk's vibrant art scene. The museum got its start in 1871 when Anne "Annie" Wood and Irene Leache sought to build an art community in Norfolk. Annie Wood established the Irene Leache Memorial which successfully petitioned the city to donate land for the first art museum in 1919. Sixteen years later the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences opened its doors. From there the museum continued to grow and received a gift from Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. in 1971 containing a substantial amount of his art collection. This donation required a new wing and inspired the idea to rename the museum in Chrysler's honor. The museum saw another renovation/expansion in 2014 that has made the building what it is today.

As a free museum with a variety of permanent exhibits with art spanning the centuries, the Chrysler Museum allows guests to experience creativity, history and life throughout the ages. Enter another time through paint, and sculpture and see how art forms like glass art have changed over the years. Enjoy new rotating exhibits that focus on highlighting the different cultures, mediums, and artists that are the foundation of the city's vibrant art scene.
