Mattaponi Reservation

Mattaponi Reservation

About

The Mattaponi, "people of the river," have inhabited this region in present day King William County for over 15,000 years. The Mattaponi Indian Reservation was created from land held by an act of the General Assembly in 1658, making it one of the oldest Reservations in the country. The Reservation is located along the banks of the Mattaponi River. The river has kept the Mattaponi people alive for centuries due to its natural resources. The Tribe is state-recognized and continues to maintain its own sovereign government under Chief Mark T. Custalow. Come visit the Mattaponi museum to learn more about the Tribe's long and interesting history.
