Carter Braxton Historical Marker

About

Carter Braxton (1736-1797) was a "Founding Father of the United States and signer of the Declaration of Independence, plantation owner and merchant." The brick structure is Elsing Green and was built by the Dandridge family between 1715-1720. Elsing Green is an impressive plantation and has been in continuous use for 300 years. Braxton bought the plantation in 1753 and lived there for five years until his father passed away and left him the Chericoke property. Chericoke is a historic home in Palls, Va and served as Braxton's home from 1767-1776. After the home burned, he moved to the town of West Point. The home now standing was rebuilt in brick by his grandson in 1828.
