Oak Grove Cemetery

Oak Grove Cemetery

About

Originally established by Lexington's first Presbyterian Church in the late 18th century, on the south end of Main Street, the historic cemetery was deeded to the City of Lexington as a public burial ground in 1949, then re-named Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. In 2020, City Council again re-named it Oak Grove Cemetery, its more inclusive name signaling its first established roots in the shade of Shenandoah Valley Trees. Walking guides to historic gravesites are available at the cemetery, or online. A comprehensive burial census prepared with the Rockbridge Historical Society and Washington & Lee University allows you to identify particular burial plots among the 6500+ people who've been interred there across four centuries, and to conveniently search by name, birth and death dates, and military branch. Among the noted local and national leaders buried in Oak Grove, are scores of soldiers who have fought in every American campaign since the War of Independence (during which Lexington and Rockbridge County were founded) through those of the 21st century.
