Part of the Hanover Courthouse Historic District, begun in 1733, Hanover Tavern is listed on the Virginia & National Registers of Historic Places as a rare surviving example of county government building sets once common in Virginia. The Tavern's illustrious life included many roles - inn, stagecoach stop, post office and dinner theater.

The Tavern is one of only a few surviving colonial-era taverns in the United States. It has hosted such historic figures as George Washington, Lord Cornwallis, and the Marquis de Lafayette.

After 15 years of restoration by the Hanover Tavern Foundation, the Tavern once again welcomes the community! Take a self-guided tour and view exhibits of the Tavern's storied past.

Founded in 1953 at Hanover Tavern, the nationally-recognized Barksdale Theatre is the oldest continually-operating dinner theatre in America. Performing today in our modern 155-seat Bradley Theater, Barksdale offers a varied selection of plays each year at the restored Tavern.
