About

Smith's Fort Plantation, located on the site of Captain John Smith's planned 'New Fort', sits nestled in Surry County on the land given by Chief Powhatan as a dowry for his daughter, Pocahontas, upon her marriage to John Rolfe. The manor house, built between 1751 and 1756 by Jacob Faulcon, is made of Flemish Bond brick and has a charming interior that retains much of its original woodwork. The home features examples of early American and English period furnishings from the late 16th through the early 18th centuries. Restored by Preservation Virginia (then known as the APVA) in 1933, visitors can now see the site of the 1609 retreat fort and the engaging manor home.

Smith's Fort Plantation is open March through December on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.
