The library building itself dates to the 1800s. It was originally a post office. They say it was a Pony Express stop, a claim seemingly based on an undated photo on the library's walls showing a horseman standing in front of the library porch. The Pembroke Women's Club (PWC) took charge of the building in the 1970s and has since been its caretaker. All of the books are donated. The lending period is two weeks.
