1832 Cedar Grove Cemetery

1832 Cedar Grove Cemetery

About

With more than 400 graves and monuments dating from the late 1700s to the present, Cedar Grove was established as the first city-owned cemetery in Portsmouth and remains its oldest. Its memorial markers include small tablets, ledger stones, obelisks, columnar monuments and mausoleums, including examples of Greek Revival, Late Victorian, and Exotic Revival funerary art. Listed on the Virginia and national registers of historic sites, the cemetery is noted not only for its funerary art, but the many civic, business, maritime, religious and military leaders buried there. Historical markers placed throughout the cemetery allow for self-guided tours. Private guided tours can be scheduled by calling 757-705-8130.
