About

Henry was an early advocate for independence who burst onto the scene with his argument against the Crown in the Parsons’ Cause. As a newly-elected Burgess, he vigorously opposed the Stamp Act and encouraged non-importation of British goods. He led the independent militia to march on Williamsburg during the Gunpowder Incident, served in the Virginia Conventions and the Continental Congress, and was elected as the first post-colonial Governor of Virginia. His arguments for the protection of individual liberties led to the first ten amendments to the Constitution, our Bill of Rights.
