About

Kick-off to the museum's month-long celebration: Frank Womble, Lecturer
Mr. Womble is a member of the Board of Governors for the American Friends of Lafayette. He will provide information about General Lafayette’s visits to Hampton Roads in 1824 and 1825 and local plans commemorating those visits in 2024/2025. Light refreshments will be served.

Lecture is at 2PM.

Along with the lecture, the museum is open for tours noon to 3 p.m. Docents share new research that reveals connections between the Hill family ancestors, General Lafayette’s Portsmouth visit of 1824, and post-commemorative events. The museum features beautiful period decorations including transparencies. These painted paper and fabric panels decorated public spaces and the windows of private homes during Lafayette’s Farewell Tour. Once illuminated from behind, they create a vibrant image for onlookers. Elegant china sets owned by the Hill family with authenticated ties to General Lafayette’s Farewell Tour are displayed in the family dining room.

Enjoy additional events at the Hill House Museum during October as part of a city-wide bicentennial celebration of the Marquis de la Fayette's Return to Portsmouth on October 25, 2024.
