Hear Ye Hanover! History Crawl: Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of Colonial Hanover's Legacy

Hanover County, VA - July 20th 2024 - Join us for an unforgettable day of historical commemoration and community celebration at the Hear Ye Hanover! History Crawl, honoring the 250th anniversary of the pivotal resolutions written by the freeholders of colonial Hanover County. This special event, highlighting the rich history of Hanover, will take place across the County on July 20th, free of charge!

Event Schedule:

Church Quarter in Beaverdam - 8:00-11:00AM

  • Kickoff with the Ladies of the Scotchtown DAR: Begin your day with the Daughters of the American Revolution as they share insights about the Hanover Resolves.

  • Treats and Demonstrations: Enjoy treats based on authentic 18th-century recipes, witness a cavalry demonstration, and experience the Revolutionary War reenactors in action.


Scotchtown - 10:00-1:00 PM

  • Spinning Bee and Weaving Demonstration: Watch as skilled artisans demonstrate spinning and weaving, showcasing the colonial response to boycotting British fabric. FREE between 10:00 and 1:00PM. Tours of Patrick Henry's Home and Grounds (req' a fee)


The Montpelier Center - 12:00-3:00PM

  • Open House: Explore the agricultural history of colonial Hanover with interactive displays and exhibits.


Sycamore Tavern - 12:00-3:00PM

  • Open House: Explore an original colonial tavern, home of the Page Library, with a special meet and greet with the Hanover Herb Guild in the colonial garden.


Ashland - 12:00-5:00 PM

  • Lunch Break and Ashland Museum Visit: Savor a delightful lunch in Ashland and tour the Ashland Museum to learn more about the town's historical context.


America's Forerunner Tour - 3:00-7:00 PM (1:30 for lunch)

  • Tour: Depart from Hanover Tavern for an enlightening tour that highlights the road to religious freedom in Hanover County, with a significant stop at Historic Pole Green.

Historic Pole Green Church - 1:00-3:00 PM

  • Tour: Experience the peace of Historic Polegreen Church, a beautiful open-air church. Feel the breeze and the sunlight welcome you as you enjoy the story of Rev. Samuel Davies and how he started Historic Polegreen Church, one of America's first non-Anglican churches. You'll feel his story come to life as you stand where he stood to preach sermons to members of his congregation, including Patrick Henry.



Hanover Courthouse and Historic Green - 7:00-8:30 PM

  • Culminating Event: Gather at the historic Hanover Courthouse for a moving reading of the Hanover Resolves. This special ceremony will feature interpretations by distinguished guests, a gospel choir and John Tucker as "Patrick Henry".

  • Refreshments: offered by the Hanover County Historical Society in the Old Clerk's Office, now the Hanover County Museum of History and Culture.


Old Stone Jail: 6:00-7:00 PM

  • Tour: Headquarters of the Hanover County Historical Society, the Jail's first floor cell will be open, and our Alexander Collection and standing clock will be on display.
