Underside of History - the Styles of Martha Washington, Martha Jefferson, Abigail Adams and Other Women of the American Revolution

About

Visitors at the Mathews Historical Museum will explore the “Underside of History” in an afternoon tea and fashion show, Sunday, October 15, 2:00 that will review women’s fashion of the Revolutionary War period in American history. “Ladies Victorian,” a company founded by two history buffs, Marilyn Iglesias and Kim Forslund, will examine the “foundations” of America—all those strange garments that enhanced the images of our Founding Mothers. Were all those layers really necessary or just whims of fancy? These two fashionistas of 18th century couturier met twenty years ago when they worked as docents at historical museums in Newport News. Their love of history developed into a business that allows them to share their love of history and fashion. They will reveal how Martha Washington, Martha Jefferson, Abigail Adams and others dressed to impress and what delicacies in undergarments enabled them to present such a stunning image to the world and the newly created United States of America. The program will feature reproduction era undergarments, lovingly created to showcase the feminine side of the Revolutionary period of our American past.
Cost for the afternoon tea and fashion show event is $12 in advance by calling 703-201-6888, or, $15 at the door.
