Lecture: Divided We Stand

Lecture: Divided We Stand

About

Bill Schneider, Professor Emeritus at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, will share his answers to the question, "Is this the most divided the United States has ever been?"

Schneider reminds us that the United States once had a civil war where three quarters of a million Americans died, most from disease or starvation. He adds that he feels this is the most divided the U.S. has been since that terrible time. To discover how this happened, Schneider traces the country's political divide back to the 1960s, when divisions over values began to replace divisions over interests. Interests (such as business versus labor) can be negotiated and compromised. Values (right versus wrong) cannot. How might this current division be resolved peacefully?

This presentation is non-partisan.
