Amplifying Indigenous Women’s Voices: Native American Slavery and Freedom in Loudoun County

About

As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War, Dr. Sheri Huerta and Lumbee Rene’ Locklear White explore the underrepresented history of Indigenous people during that time and the complexities of freedom. Court cases from Loudoun County show the evolution of Indigenous women pressing for their legal rights against the backdrop of colonial, state, and national debates about liberty and slavery during the Revolutionary War era.

Presented by Oatlands in partnership with The Black History Committee of the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library and Gary Clemens, Clerk of the Circuit Court Historic Records Division.

Made possible in part by a grant from VA250 Commission in partnership with Virginia Humanities.
