Lafayette's Return to Richmond

Lafayette

About

On Sunday, October 27th, Commonwealth Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution joins with co-sponsors American Friends of Lafayette, Rassawek, and Rocketts Landing, to welcome Lafayette as he returns to Richmond.

Commonwealth Chapter invites you to join with Virginia State Regent Laurie Nesbitt, and Lafayette himself, as the Marquis de Lafayette Returns to Richmond on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

Just as he did 200 years ago, Lafayette arrives at 2:00 pm via steamboat on the James River at Rocketts Landing, a major international seaport in its day. In 1824, in spite of inclement weather, the residents of the Richmond area were not to be denied a glimpse of their hero...hundreds arrived on foot and on horseback to greet Lafayette as he disembarked from the steamboat at Rocketts.

Commonwealth Chapter is co-sponsoring this Welcome with the American Friends of Lafayette (AFL), and two leading Virginia businesses, Rassawek (the steamboat owner) and Rocketts Landing (the event host). AFL will be represented by Chuck Schwam, AFL Executive Director and Chair of the Bicentennial Tour, and by Patti Maclay, AFL Board member and National Chair of the NSDAR Franco-American Memorial Committee. And management teams from Rassawek and Rocketts Landing have fascinating stories to share about the Rev War history associated with their businesses.

Also joining us on the program will be Sara Terpenning, President of Virginia Children of the American Revolution, whose State President's Project is 'Agent 1776-Spies of the American Revolution'. One of those spies was James Armistead Lafayette, servant to Lafayette and double agent helping to uncover Cornwallis' plans.
.
Many additional historical tidbits, some known and some not so well known, await you, along with delightful Richmond area company, as the event is open to the public.
