Established by the General Assembly in 2020, VA250 serves to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War, and the Independence of the United States in the Commonwealth of Virginia. From its founding ideals to its leading figures, more of what made America happen, happened here in Virginia. Which makes Virginia the ideal place to learn about our nation’s beginnings, no matter what state you call home. Leadership & Membership

The VA250 Commission is comprised of individuals representing the Commonwealth’s government, private and non-profit sectors and coordinates the Commemoration’s planning and development and includes representatives from historical sites and museums across Virginia, leadership of Virginia’s Indian tribes, members of the Virginia legislature and citizen members. The Commission is chaired by Delegate Terry L. Austin and vice-chaired by Senator Mamie E. Locke.

Honorary Leadership Council

The VA250 Honorary Leadership Council includes Governor Glenn Youngkin, all nine living former Virginia governors, the state’s entire congressional delegation, key state officials, and is headed up by the VA250 National Honorary Chair, Carly Fiorina. will be giving their voices towards the 250th commemoration. This bipartisan group serves as a guiding force for the commemoration, ensuring its authenticity and inclusivity.

Signature Events

These signature events are bringing together Virginians, travelers, history lovers and special guests from the state and nation to join events that celebrate and commemorate major moments of 250 years ago leading up to July 4, 1776.

The VA250 Mobile Museum Experience

The hands-on, interactive, and immersive “museum on wheels, the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience “Out of Many, One” is currently traveling Virginia and beyond. The mobile museum brings key stories of Virginia’s rich history to schools, museums, local events, fairs, and more, highlighting every region of the state. Give Me Liberty Exhibition

The first major 250th show in the nation, Give Me Liberty is a signature 5,000 square foot exhibition displayed at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture before moving to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown in 2026.

This exhibition focuses on events throughout the revolutionary period and inspire a deep appreciation for the continental and global forces as well as the individual actions by both iconic and ordinary people that brought about a model of democratic government that would change the world. Immersive multimedia scenes bring significant moments in history to life. Visitors can experience the electrifying atmosphere at St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry delivered his famous speech and see an early tavern and print house where many lively conversations occurred.

Grants

Grant opportunities in partnership with Virginia Tourism Corporation and Virginia Humanities, VA250 provides funding opportunities to support Virginia local committee programming. Click here to view VA250 grants.

Educational Programs

The 250th anniversary of American independence provides an opportunity to educate, engage, and inspire Virginia students about American history, values, and beliefs. The VA250 Commission is working with the Virginia Department of Education to accomplish these goals:

Local Committees

There are 134 cities and counties in Virginia all of whom have been invited to form committees to showcase their own revolutionary history and events. Click here to see a current list of local VA250 committees and to access links to their membership and activities.

Events and Places to Visit

The VA250 website includes a Statewide Calendar showing Commission signature events as well as local events and sites of historic interest. There will be an interactive map on the website that will allow visitors to search by location and area of interest.

How To Get Involved

Those wishing to get involved can contact their local committee or the Commission staff for more information on volunteer opportunities, how to donate, and other ways to support the commemoration.
