Florence Price Symphony No. 1 presented by Hampton Roads Philharmonic

About

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic is presenting an all-American program. This free concert will be held at the Diamonstein Hall at the Ferguson Center for the Arts on Sunday, April 19 at 2:30 pm. The highlight is Florence Price's Symphony No. 1.  Price was the first female African-American composer to be played by a major orchestra - the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1933. Though fairly well-known in her time, she was forgotten over the years but has recently had a revival, especially after a collection of her works were discovered during a renovation of her long abandoned summer home. Influences of African-American spirituals and dance are heard in her Symphony. Also being performed are Suite No. 2 (Indian Suite) by Edward MacDowell  (1892) and the meditative Dusk by Steven Bryant (2004).
