A Visitation with Governor Spotswood

About

Join us in our Sandra and William H. Speiden auditorium for a presentation by Beau Robbins and an intimate experience with Lt. Governor Alexander Spottswood.

Alexander Spotswood served from 1710 to 1722 as lieutenant governor of Virginia. During his tenure, Spotswood sought to improve the colony's security and economy and relations with Virginia's Indigenous people. From Orange County, the de facto seat of colonial authority, Spottswood In 1716 led an expedition across the Blue Ridge Mountains and into the Shenandoah Valley (dubbed the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe). Spotswood established a settlement of German colonists in Orange County known as Germanna which germinated the colony's fledgling iron production industry that would serve it through the Revolutionary period.
