This My Mark: Josephine Williams

About

“This My Mark: Josephine Williams” is a FREE 90-minute tour that begins at Clermont Farm (151 Clermont Lane, Berryville) and continues at the Josephine School Community Museum (303 Josephine St., Berryville). The tour connects the two historic properties with two remarkable women. In 1870, Ellen Jett McCormick was widowed, in debt, and selling off land. Her former slave Josephine asked Mrs. McCormick to subdivide 31 acres for freed slaves, who bought the one-acre lots for $100 each. The Black community that developed became known as Josephine City. NOTE: Visitors need to drive approximately 1.5 miles between the two locations.
