The Revolutionary Rumble
The celebration of America’s 250th birthday year is officially underway, and Virginia is leading the way with events that engage and inspire every community across the Commonwealth. Watch as James Madison invites the youth of Virginia and all of us to discover the revolutionary spirit and join the celebration of liberty in the year ahead.

With the start of America’s 250th year, Virginia is seeing more commemorative events than ever across the Commonwealth thanks to all of our partners at local 250 commissions and historic sites. These partners not only offer great content and events, but they also may have great opportunities for you to get involved locally as a volunteer.
We know you’re as proud as we are of Virginia’s leadership in our nation’s founding story. We’re making it easy for you to wear your pride on your sleeve while helping us spread the word about America Made In Virginia and all of the amazing 250th commemorative happenings. ALBEMARLE COUNTY & CHARLOTTESVILLE

Albemarle County Fair at James Monroe’s Highland
This fun and festive “Old-Time Country Fair” will be a three-day agricultural celebration, complete with exhibits, home arts, family entertainment, live music, livestock, and grand old-time country fun. Fair goers will also enjoy a number of demonstrations of historic and cultural significance, including wool spinners and a blacksmith, and the opportunity to have photographic silhouettes made.

Get a sneak peek at Gabriel, a soaring new musical production by Richmonders Jerold Solomon, Foster Solomon and Ron Klipp. Learn about the creation process of Gabriel from performers, production team members, and historical partners, then enjoy a preview performance of songs from the musical.

Monroe and Lafayette: A Reunion
Join James Monroe’s Highland for a special afternoon of public programming on the Marquis de Lafayette’s friendship with James Monroe as Highland commemorates the final leg of Lafayette’s 1825 return tour to the United States.

Join the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center for a one-hour tour where we explore exhibitions in our contemporary gallery or the history of Charlottesville through our permanent exhibition, Pride Overcomes Prejudice.

Join a yoga instructor for an hour long Yoga class on Carlyle’s Magnolia Terrace. Afterwards, enjoy a mocktail with yoga participants and staff. Yoga Happy Hours are a fundraiser for new exhibit cases in the museum and sponsored by the Friends of Carlyle House.

Celebrate Friendship Fire Company’s 251st year! Learn about fire safety yesterday and today, plus see Alexandria Fire Department equipment up close. There will be booths by the Alexandria Police Department and Sheriff’s Office, music performances, displays by community organizations, local vendors, and food and beverage sales. Join in water play and please-touch artifact activities. Children will receive free toy Friendship firefighting helmets.
Carlyle House Family Fun Day – Pet Fête
Come join your friends on the Carlyle House Magnolia Terrace for Family Fun Day on the first Saturday of the month from April-November! From 12-3pm, you can sit in on story time that starts at the top of the hour and participate in crafts and other activities that relate to the theme of the month.

VA250 Mobile Museum Experience comes to the Alleghany Highlands of VA
The mobile museum will be a vendor at The 47th Annual Street Scene event that will be taking place in downtown Covington, VA on August 9, 2025! Street Scene is the longest running car show in Virginia. Along with cars, trucks and bikes you will find food, vendors, kids activities and more filling the streets of downtown Covington, making this a fun filled family activity.

Peake Speaks History Lecture Series Featuring Kate Livie
Historian Kate Livie presents “Chesapeake’s Showboat: The James Adams Floating Theater 1914-1941,” an entertaining look at the James Adams Floating Theater, a real-life “magical little showboat” that entertained people along the waterways of the Chesapeake for almost 30 years and was the inspiration for the groundbreaking musical “Show Boat.”

CCHA is proud to partner with other local historical organizations as we welcome back The Slave Dwelling Project to the Burwell-Morgan Mill as part of the Hungry for History program. Members of the Slave Dwelling Project will be on hand to discuss the everyday life of the enslaved in Clarke County, and the kinds of food they made.

200th Celebration of Lafayette’s Visit to Greenwood Estate and Downtown Culpeper
On Saturday morning the Military Reception will be held at Greenwood Estate with Gen. Lafayette & suite arriving by carriage escorted by four mounted color guard. Following this reception, Lafayette’s carriage will lead a parade with mounted color guards, drum and fife, marching bands and more to be welcomed at his Civic Reception in downtown Culpeper. Events, scavenger hunts, tours and games will be held throughout the day for visitors to enjoy Lafayette and Culpeper history. That evening a Grand Ball (costumes encouraged) will held in his honor.

An evening of elegance and merriment held in honor of the General Lafayette’s historic return to Culpeper, just as it was celebrated 200 years ago. Guests will be welcomed into the world of English Country Dance with guidance from Dance Master Mr. Charles Steplively and Dance Mistress Elaine Sturgeon, accompanied by live period music performed by a traditional quartet led by Mr. Steven Hickman. Members of the Rappahannock Colonial Heritage Society will join in the festivities and help lead the dances.

The Colonial Allies Challenge Cup is an international military polo tournament featuring active-duty officers from the United States and France playing together in a friendly competition that commemorates the Franco-American alliance formed during the Revolutionary War.

World War II 80th Anniversary Weekend
This 80th anniversary living history event brings to life the experiences of fighting abroad and the war on the home front during World War II. Guests will have the chance to learn from living historians portraying soldiers who fought in WWII and about different aspects of a soldier’s life including weapons, signals and communications, and tactical demonstrations. The VA250 Mobile Museum Experience will be open for visitors this weekend.

Hessians in Isle of Wight County
The term “Hessian” refers to the approximately 30,000 German troops hired by the British to help fight during the American Revolution. Today, on the 250th anniversary of the first landing of German soldiery in America as “auxiliaries” of King George III’s Crown Forces to subdue the rebellious colonials, we will highlight their story to include those who fought here in Isle of Wight County.

The Cemetery Preservation Workshop is a free program designed to educate volunteers on the necessary training needed to safely preserve and protect historic tombstones and markers. This program promotes engagement and preservation of the church cemetery through education and practical experience.

Asia and Asians in the 18th Century Mid-Atlantic
Asia was known for centuries in Europe, and the British were keen to profit off the exotic goods through commerce. This trade was far from a one-sided exchange; it was a dialogue between two very distinct cultures. Goods, ideas and people flowed through trade routes established by the British East India Company and reached as far as the 13 colonies (soon, the nascent United States). Asians arrived as distant foreigners in a strange land but left an indelible mark that has only recently been uncovered through careful research and revisiting overlooked documents.

This free and day-long event will feature a June 1775 living history event to be held in Urbanna Baptist Church at 121 Watling Street at 11 am: Colonial Williamsburg interpreters, portraying Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson and George Wythe, will engage in a lively discussion about the actions of the Second Continental Congress, which convened in May 1775.

Rind took over her husband’s printing office upon his death, and in 1766 became Virginia’s first female printer and newspaper publisher.

The Kidnapping of Pocahontas, Politics, and Mythmaking in Patawomeck Country
This presentation takes an Indigenous-centered approach to that specific event, understanding it in reference to the larger social, political, and cultural contexts that were at play during the time. The myth that arose from this highly complex event illustrates how Indigenous history has been manipulated over centuries by non-Indigenous people to justify taking land, genocide, and denying identity.
