A Journey to Freedom: Josephine Williams
A FREE 90-minute tour that connects two historic properties with two remarkable women. In 1870, Ellen Jett McCormick was widowed, in debt, and selling off land. Her former slave Josephine asked Mrs. McCormick to subdivide 31 acres for freed slaves, who bought the one-acre lots for $100 each. The Black community that developed became known as Josephine City.
Fairfax County
Join the Friends of Green Spring Gardens (FROGS) and test your knowledge of Black History at our Trivia Night.
Frederick County
A seven-mile bike ride with stops at historic sites with costumed interpreters sharing brief information.
Louisa County
Jack Jouett, the Paul Revere of the South, rode from Louisa County to Monticello to warn Thomas Jefferson and other Virginia legislatures of incoming British troops. Celebrate Jouett’s ride with a festival featuring historical demonstrations, children’s activities, craft and food vendors, and more.
Middlesex County
This marker will replace a Hewick marker that was erected in 1930 on Route 17 near Warner. The new marker will be placed at the gate of Hewick adjacent to a historic marker that was erected in 1992 about Hewick owner Christopher Robinson.
Portsmouth
250 Years of the U.S. Marine Corps
Part of a speaker series from the Friends of the Naval Shipyard Museum on 250 years of the U.S. Marine Corps. The speaker will be Shawn Callahan, Ph.D., Director, U.S. Marine Corps History Division.

Virginia Resolved: A Commemoration of Independence
Join us for a day of festivities marking the 249th anniversary of Richard Henry Lee’s Resolution on Independence.
Williamsburg
The National Civics Bee® is an annual competition that inspires young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. The National Civics Bee is a nonpartisan initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to enhance civic literacy, skills, and participation. Middle school students from public, private, charter, and homeschools are invited to apply to the 2025 National Civics Bee by submitting an essay with ideas about improving their communities.
York County
Those pesky British are at it again. The Royal Artillery has invaded the Yorktown Battlefield, and they are showing off their might. Join us for a series of artillery demonstrations behind the Colonial National Historical Park Visitor Center. Participants will be able to meet re-enactors, learn about the weapons used during the American Revolution, and watch live cannon firings.

250th Anniversary of Lord Dunmore’s Virginia Campaign
Lord Dunmore – He’s the man the colonists loved to hate. Join us for a look back at the controversial British leader during the 250th Anniversary of his Virginia Campaign. After dissolving the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg and in the midst of rising unrest, Dunmore escaped to a British ship in the York River on June 8, 1775. From there, he organized numerous raids and attacks along the waterfront. We’ll take a look back at this pivotal moment in American history during a week filled with reenactments, musical performances, and family-friendly activities. This event is part of the Virginia 250 Celebration and is open to the public.

Dance, Dance, & Revolution: Historic Dance Class
This program is for people of all ages and will explore the significance of music and dance during America’s colonial, revolutionary, and early republic eras. You’ll learn the steps and try your hand (and foot) at two historic dances! Led by Dance instructor Sarah Stillman, no prior dance experience is needed.

Roots of Revolution: Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Walking Tour
Commemorate #VA250 in Richmond with the Valentine Museum. Step into the past in Shockoe Bottom, one of Richmond’s oldest historic districts, to learn about the struggles for freedom that shaped our nation. Join Richmond’s most experienced guides as we explore this historic neighborhood that was both the center of the domestic slave trade and the birthplace of American religious liberty. We’ll visit Richmond’s canal walk, explore the remnants of Richmond’s industrial origins, and stop by the Henry “Box” Brown monument.

Dinwiddie’s VA250 Kickoff – Commemorative Tree Planting
This special event will feature a commemorative tree planting to honor the formation of the Dinwiddie Committees of Correspondence — a pivotal moment in the county’s Revolutionary history. Cheryl Wilson, Executive Director of VA250 will share insights on statewide efforts to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Patrick Henry: The Civic Faith of an Enlightened Patriot
Historian Jon Kukla says if he were to choose a modern-day T shirt for Patrick Henry it might have been the one that says: “Under-Estimate Me: That will be fun!” In this presentation Kukla shows you cannot understand the American Revolution without Virginia and you cannot understand Virginia without Patrick Henry.
Richmond
Book Talk With Andrew Lawler | A Perfect Frenzy
A talk by author and journalist Andrew Lawler on his latest book, “A Perfect Frenzy: A Royal Governor, His Black Allies, and the Crisis that Spurred the American Revolution.” Lawler explores the surprisingly little-known story of the early American Revolution in Virginia, focusing on Lord Dunmore, the colony’s royal governor, who is commonly portrayed as a villain who opposed the patriots and destroyed the port of Norfolk.

Held annually to honor the memory of the County’s namesake Dr. Joseph Warren, this year’s ceremony will include a dedication of a granite bench with the names of Revolutionary War soldiers who are buried in Warren County and the Town of Front Royal.

Army’s 250th Birthday Celebration at Fort Gregg-Adams
Our celebration includes the opening up of a museum enclave outside the gate of the post, increasing public accessibly. The museum enclave includes the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum, the U.S. Army Women’s Museum, and the Ordnance Training Support Facility. Enjoy tours of the museums and a presentation on 250 years of Army Sustainment.

“Prelude to Freedom: The Contraband Story” is a musical drama depicting the historic events that occurred at the onset of the Civil War at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia – significantly, the very same site where the first captured Africans arrived in the future United States in 1619.

Feast of Reason in the Courtyard
Inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s legendary dinner parties—where great minds gathered to exchange ideas over food and drink—the Feast of Reason is a unique guided conversation dedicated to intellectual exploration, civil discourse, and the pursuit of knowledge. After getting your food and beverage, sit down with friends, old and new, and engage in conversation using our new conversation card deck. Dialogue about civics is the goal.
The Highland Council of Descendant Advisors welcomes anyone working on or interested in the histories of slavery, the shared work of making our present and future more equitable based on historical knowledge, and collaboration in research. Plan to share information, resources, and encouragement with others journeying on the same path.
Charlottesville
Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day, Juneteenth commemorates the day that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally emancipated. This year’s festivities in Charlottesville occur on June 14, from 9 am to 3 pm, and will include a parade, ancestral tribute, and concert on the lawn.

Revolutionary Culpeper Walking Tour
This walking tour explores the people, places, and events shaped by Culpeper’s patriots and how these activities were written into the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and other founding documents in this downtown walking tour led by staff and volunteers of the Museum of Culpeper History.
Come learn about Revolutionary War history, the Culpeper Minutemen and the road to independence! Race to get ready, march like a soldier, wear a tricorn hat and explore what life was like in Virginia during the beginning of the American Revolution. The event is free and open to all who come with someone of another generation.

250th Celebration of Washington Taking Command
Celebrate the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army and the historic moment when George Washington took command of the United States Army. Visit an 18th-century military encampment and witness military drills and firing demonstrations.
The American Revolution: Ken Burns Film Preview & Conversation
Watch a preview of a new six-part documentary series coming to PBS on November 16 from film directors and producers Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt, which explores the country’s founding struggle and its eight-year War for Independence.
Gunston Hall’s Declaration Day
Save the date for the commemoration of the 249th anniversary of the Virginia Declaration of Rights! The day will be full of activities for the whole family, including live music, speakers, tours of the historic house, and museum theater performances.

Faces of Freedom: A 160th Juneteenth Celebration
Since 1619, people of African ancestry have been woven into the American tapestry. Our Faces of Freedom event celebrates Africans and African Americans from the 1600s to today. Atumpan will perform traditional dance with drums to honor the first Africans. Historical interpreters will be on-site and on stage to introduce themselves and how they found freedom in a society where that was not always legal or the norm.
James City County

Tavern Night at Williams Ordinary
Take a sip of history while learning about Williams Ordinary, a historic tavern in Dumfries. Enjoy a unique experience in this local landmark by listening to colonial music, interacting with reenactors, and playing 18th-century games. This Tavern Night serves as the opening for Resolves to Revolution, a new exhibition exploring the impact of the American Revolutionary War on Prince William County.
Dinwiddie County
Cry Liberty! Dinwiddie County Musters for the American Revolution
Join the Park as we commemorate the muster of over 500 militia men from Dinwiddie County, Virginia who answered the call at Dinwiddie Courthouse in June of 1775. After forming an active Committee of Correspondence in protest of the Intolerable Acts, before the events of Lexington and Concord, Dinwiddie residents rose to join the patriot cause for liberty.
America’s Founding Story: Church Hill Neighborhood Walking Tour

Lunch & Learn: Hills and Stamps and Self-Governance
Today is the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill which was fought during the Siege of Boston in the first stage of the American Revolutionary War. The battle boosted American morale and demonstrated the colonists’ willingness to fight. Several stamps have been produced to commemorate this event. View these stamps to understand this historic event as well as its connection to Isle of Wight County.

Lord Dunmore’s War & the Battle of Point Pleasant
Highlighting the narrative of Capt. John Stewart of Greenbrier County, Virginia, Dave Robbins will speak on Andrew Lewis, William Fleming, and other area natives and their roles in the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774. This single, decisive battle of Lord Dunmore’s War has been argued as the first battle of the Revolution, and shaped how some Native Americans sided during the Revolution.

Walking Tours of Historic Prince William Towns: Sudley Springs
Explore the remnants of Sudley Springs, which at one time was a bustling hamlet, home to a church, a mill, and a mineral spring. This tour is co-hosted by the Sudley Springs United Methodist Church and Manassas National Battlefield Park.
Appomattox County
Appomattox will celebrate the 160th Anniversary of the last of the enslaved people gaining their freedom. There will be games, food, raffles, and prizes. We will have vendors and musical performances. This event is free, family friendly, and open to the public.

This celebration includes a fantastic vendor fair featuring 160 local vendors, a kid zone with thrilling inflatables, a vibrant community stage showcasing local talent, and a variety of delicious food. And that’s not all – this year’s musical theme is Go-Go music, a uniquely regional sound that’s deeply rooted in the African American community, symbolizing resilience and unity. Originally from Washington, D.C., Go-Go has become a beloved genre across the DMV area, including right here in Henrico County!

Voices of Freedom: Songs and Stories of the Underground Railroad

When colonists came over from England, one of the popular methods of preserving berries was covering them with vinegar and letting them ferment over time eventually becoming shrubs or drinking vinegars. The shrub was then used to flavor water, soda waters, and even became a mixer for cocktails! What goes great with shrub? Cheese!

Clarke County’s “Juneteenth Celebration” – noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Clarke County Ruritan Fairgrounds in Berryville – is a FREE event for the whole family. The day features live music and entertainment, arts, crafts, and food vendors. The theme is freedom, hope, and respect for all cultures.
