Built in 1804 by George Carter, a member of one of Virginia's first familes, Oatlands was a thriving plantation until the Civil War. In the 20th century, Oatlands became the country estate of the politically prominent Eustis family of Washington. Open to the public since 1966, Oatlands is a National Trust Historic Site and a National Historic Landmark, and continues to flourish with four full seasons of activities.
