Fieldcrest Clubhouse

Fieldcrest Clubhouse

About

In 1916, Marshall Field and Company, of the Chicago Marshall Field Department Store, purchased 1841 acres of land surrounded by the Smith River. Marshall Field had long purchased items to sell in his store and decided to build his own manufacturing facilities to supply the goods. The original investment was one million dollars and established the first town in the county to have paved roads and electricity. The town of Fieldale housed the workers and managers of the Mill and had its own store for locals to get everything they needed and charge it to their company accounts. People came from all over to settle in Fieldale to get a good job and secure housing for their families.

The town of Fieldale and Fieldcrest Mills were built first, but in 1917 construction began on the Fieldcrest Clubhouse, originally named the Marshall Field and Company Clubhouse. In 1918, construction was completed, and this English Tudor style mansion was available for executives, governors, celebrities and more to stay when they came to do business with Fieldcrest Mills.

The main building hosts seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, six stone fireplaces, a foyer, a sitting room, a bar, a living room, a dining room, industrial style kitchen and a glass enclosed porch that runs the width of one end of the house. There are balconies on either end of the second floor that provide beautiful views of the area.
