Isle of Wight 1750 Courthouse
About
This remarkable building served as Isle of Wight County's courthouse from 1752 until 1800. During this time, it was the center of county colonial government and then it bore witness to the earliest days of our democracy. Completed in 1752, it is one of only four remaining arcaded colonial court buildings in Virginia and the only colonial courthouse boasting the distinctive semi-circular apse. In 1799, a clerk's office was constructed adjacent to the courthouse. In 1800, a new county courthouse was built and the 1750 courthouse fell into private hands. The arcade was enclosed, a front porch was added, and the roof changed to a gable, completely covering the original structure except the apse. In the 1930s, the building was saved from demolition by community action and generosity. The initial renovation was completed in 1961. It was during this renovation that the original building was discovered. That and subsequent work has fully restored the courthouse and today it accurately recreates the appearance of a typical Virginia courthouse of the period. Currently, the 1750 Courthouse is undergoing further restoration and it is expected to be fully operational by May, 2015. Admission to the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse is free and is available for rental for private events.Details
