Battersea

Battersea

About

Battersea is an 18th century estate on 37 beautiful acres in Petersburg. It was built in 1768 by Colonel John Banister, a member of the VA House of Burgesses, first mayor of Petersburg and a signer of the Articles of Confederation. Surviving both Revolutionary War and Civil War battles in the city, Battersea's uniqueness is not only defined by age, but by its 5-part Palladian style architecture. Of particular note is the exquisite Chinese Chippendale staircase in the entrance hall. Battersea and its surrounding property, including its historic greenhouse, are currently being restored. The greenhouse is also an architectural gem, as it is perhaps one of the earliest American greenhouses still in existence today. There is a significant horticultural legacy at Battersea. In 2018 Battersea's 250th birthday will be celebrated. Battersea was standing before the U. S. ever had a president.

Battersea hosts events throughout the year, including performances by Virginia Opera, yoga on the lawn in September, and its signature event, Oysters, barbecue...Battersea, which is the Foundation's major fundraising event. Battersea is also available for weddings and private events.
