Waverly Historic Home & Farm

Waverly Historic Home & Farm

About

This ochre-colored mansion with its Greek Revival portico and Gothic Revival rear wing, is an architectural highlight on the scenic Halfway Road connecting Middleburg and The Plains in the Little River Rural Historic District. The core of Waverley is an 18th-century stone cottage which was incorporated into the present house in antebellum times. The end chimney of the cottage remains visible behind the portico piers. With its component parts, one rustic and the others stylish, Waverley illustrates the dramatic change in lifestyle that took place for many of the county's farmers in the mid-19th century. Signaling the era when the region became popular for prestigious country estates, the house was restored in the 1940s by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Furness, who employed Chicago architect David Adler for the project. Waverley later was the site of Virginia's pioneering wineries. Piedmont Vineyards was established in 1973 and lasted nearly two decades.
