Around 1836, this lot and the structure that stood on it was purchased by Fleming K. Rich. Legend has it that Rich built this house sometime thereafter for his daughter. It was said that he was "so pleased with his workmanship that he offered a prize of $10 to anyone who could find a knot in any of the wood used in the house." It was owned by several Wytheville families in the years after including the Hurts, Gibboneys, and Ewalds.
