This grave is believed to be the oldest in Patrick County. William Letcher was a pioneer and early settler of what would later become Patrick County, Virginia. He was murdered by a Tory sympathizer on August 2, 1780. He was buried on his farm that remained in his family for several generations. His great grandson, Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, was born there.
