The Historic Aquia Church is one of the oldest active colonial churches still in operation in America today, and is designated a National Historic Landmark. Built between 1751-1757, Aquia Church is noted for its three-tiered wooden pulpit and Aquia stone trim. Visitors travel from around the world to study the hand-painted calligraphy on wood behind the altar, displaying The Lord's Prayer and The Ten Commandments. The church survived three wars, burying its original silver church communion set on several occasions - which it still possesses today. The most notable evidence of war are the names and units of soldiers carved in the stones and written on the walls of the church during the Civil War occupation. The surrounding cemetery is home to many historic gravesites and early Virginia names on gravestones carved from Aquia stone.
