Named for 17th-century English antiroyalist John Hampden and Algernon Sydney, this Presbyterian-affiliated college was established in 1775. It is the oldest private charter college in the South. Patrick Henry, who helped obtain the charter from the General Assembly in 1783, and James Madison were among the college's first trustees. Student companies were formed here during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
