About

The historic museum building houses a collection of over 1,600 items, including decorative arts, personal items, costumes and memorabilia, all belonging to 5th president James Monroe. Additionally, the on-site archives houses over 10,000 documents, and the library holds over 3,000 volumes of rare and historic books. Visitors may take guided tours of 5 exhibition galleries, browse in the Museum Store and enjoy the lovely Memorial Garden. Those interested in furthering their Monroe knowledge may also make appointments to do research in the archives. Events held throughout the year also provide fun, family-friendly entertainment. The museum is open Monday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm; Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. During the months of December, January and February, the museum closes at 4:00pm daily. The building is handicap accessible.
