A Revolutionary Tea Party and Fashion Show at the Mathews Museum

In conjunction with the VA250 American Revolution celebratory activities in Mathews County, the Mathews Museum will host Martha Washington and Abigail Adams as they “spill the tea,” Sunday, August 18, 2024, from 2:00pm-4:00pm. "There will be unlimited amounts of hot tea served with cream and sweeteners, accompanied by numerous types of savories and sweets", says event chair, Cindy Roman.

As a part of the afternoon’s activities, guests will spend a lovely time with "Ladies Victorian" as they present "Our Founding Mothers and What They Wore.” Martha Washington and Abigail Adams, as interpreters of colonial times, will be attired in period clothing and will show how to wear the finishing touches of reticules, tussie mussies, paletots, and chatelains that are needed to complement their fine hostess gowns.

"Ladies Victorian" is a company founded by two history buffs and talented couturiers, Marilyn Iglesias and Kim Forslund. These two fashionistas of 18th century couturier met twenty years ago when they worked as docents at historical museums in Newport News. Joining them will be Generals Thomas Mathews and Andrew Lewis, who will make a special guest appearances as revolutionary gentlemen.

There will also be a silent auction with numerous tea related items ranging from teapots, to decorative items to tea cosies. Cost is $35 and tickets can be purchased at the Mathews County Visitor Center, at Haskins Bayside Service Center in Port Haywood and at the Mathews Museum on Saturdays. from 10:00am until 2:00pm.
