A Place of Our Own

A Place of Our Own

About

Before the Revolutionary War...Before the Emancipation Proclamation...Before the 13th Amendment...Before the Civil Rights Movement...The Maroon colonies of the Great Dismal Swamp achieved freedom, equality, and independence beyond what even our Founding Fathers dreamt.

What hardships would you endure to live free…to have a place to call your own…to create a community where all are equal. Travel deep into the Great Dismal Swamp as History Alive weaves a fascinating tale through monologue, vignette, and song. Written and directed by Karen Washburn with musical arrangements by Grammy-nominated producer Mark Carman.

A recitation by Tonya Sinclair Swindell of her poem, “A Call to the Descendants of the Maroons” completes this meaningful Commemoration of Juneteenth 2024.
