America250 – A Choral Celebration at the University of Virginia

About

The UVA University Singers, the University of Virginia's flagship choral ensemble, invite you to join them Friday, April 10th at 8:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall for a special spring concert 2026, featuring music celebrating America's 250th and Virginia's connection to the founding of our country. The program will include settings of Jefferson's words "We Hold These Truths" by Todd Frazier, and emeritus faculty composer Judith Shatin (the latter work first performed during a visit of Mikhail Gorbachev to UVA in 1993.) In addition, excerpts from Randall Thompson's Testament of Freedom and A Concord Cantata (depicting the first battle of the Revolutionary War), H.T. Burleigh's arrangement of "My Lord What a Morning", work of early American composer George Bristow (accompanied by a short documentary by Eduardo Montes–Bradley), and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" fill out the program.

The concert is led by UVA faculty conductor Michael Slon, and includes a celebration of Prof. Slon's 25 years at UVA. In addition, the ensemble will release a new America250 recording created with Grammy–winning producer Blanton Alspaugh, and featuring works of Copland, Thompson, Frazier, and Hailstork. Tickets for the concert are available at the UVA Arts Box Office: https://artsboxoffice.virginia.edu/ | 434 924-3376, and in person at the door. A livestream link will also be available through the Dept. of Music.
