About

"Un/Bound: Free Black Virginians, 1619-1865"
VMHC Traveling Exhibition
Hosted by Rockbridge Historical Society

Through March 31, at the Lexington Public Library (138 S. Main St.), the Rockbridge Historical Society will be staging "Un/Bound: Free Black Virginians, 1619-1865": the pioneering exhibition curated by the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, now traveling statewide. Explore the website at: tinyurl.com/Free-Black-Virginians-pre1865.

The exhibit's 20 richly-illustrated panels illuminate different pathways to freedom (and the range of continued constraints) experienced by African Americans in Rockbridge and Virginia before the Civil War.

Throughout April, the exhibit can then be seen at the RHS Museum (101 E. Washington St.), Fridays-Sundays, 1PM - 4PM.

The exhibit will close on Sunday, May 3, with an illustrated slideshow surveying the experiences of "Free Black People in Rockbridge before the Civil War," presented by Larry Spurgeon, Cinder Stanton, and Eric Wilson (2 PM, Manly Memorial Baptist Church).  A closing reception follows at 4 PM at the RHS Museum.
