Lafayette 250 Celebration - New Baltimore, Virginia

About

We are thrilled to announce an upcoming FREE Lafayette event in New Baltimore, Virginia, to be held on Saturday, May 16th, 2026, at 2 pm ET. This event will result in the addition of our 21st Lafayette Trail marker in the Old Dominion.

New Baltimore is an unincorporated community near Warrenton in Fauquier County. Several sources attribute its name to the presence in town at its beginning of a reporter of the Niles' Register, a major magazine based in Baltimore, Maryland.

General Lafayette stopped in New Baltimore, Virginia, towards the end of his "Farewell Tour", as he returned to Washington City, after having visited Presidents Madison and Jefferson at their respective estates. Indeed, local newspapers point to a brief stop at the tavern of James Hampton, where Lafayette enjoyed refreshments on August 24th, 1825.

Our New Baltimore marker will be our first one in Fauquier County. This marker is the result of extensive research. To that end, we would like to acknowledge and thank the Fauquier County Public Library, the Fauquier County Planning Division, and the research team at the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
The dedication ceremony for this new marker will take place as part of a Lafayette 250 function honoring Lafayette's contributions to American freedom as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

This event is part of our ongoing collaboration with the Virginia Society Children of the American Revolution under the leadership of its state president, Meredith Hopkins. It comes after the very successful events held on November 15th, 2025, in Yorktown and on January 10th, 2026, in James City County.

Passing on the story of the American Revolution to future generations was always one of the key missions that Lafayette championed in this country. The Lafayette Trail, Inc. is proud to continue that tradition with this collaboration with Virginia CAR. We thank its leadership for partnering with us on this momentous occasion.

The ceremony will take place at 2 pm ET at 5290 Old Alexandria Turnpike, Warrenton, VA 20187. The patriotic function is expected to last approximately 45 minutes, including speeches by all the stakeholders involved in the preparation of this new marker, and photo opportunities for attendees.

Once again, this patriotic function is FREE OF CHARGE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. We hope you will be able to attend! To find out more about this event, please visit lafayette250.org/events or send us an email at the following email address: inquiries@thelafayettetrail.org.

Old historical documents pertaining to the house will be on display for the occasion. Refreshments will also be provided. Plenty of free parking will be available on site for participants.
