About

What the Founders Read

The year 1776 was about more than declaring independence from Britain; it also saw the adoption of the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the First Virginia Constitution.

On the 250th anniversary of these landmark constitutional documents, explore their intellectual origins by "reading what the Founders read": pre-revolutionary American pamphlets and speeches, influential political writings from the Enlightenment, infamous tales from British history, and classics from Ancient Rome about the struggles of republican government.

Survey and discuss the vast literature surrounding freedom of press and religion, the use of the military, separation of powers, and democratic rule by the People. And take some levity breaks with Benjamin Franklin!
