Founding Frenemies: Hamilton and the Virginians

About

Mathews VA250 to co-Host New Exhibit, “Frenemies,” at the Mathews Museum

“Founding Frenemies: Hamilton and the Virginians,” a traveling exhibit from the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, will be on exhibit at the Mathews Museum through May 26. Co-sponsored by VA250, the Mathews Museum and the Mathews County Historical Society, the exhibit complements Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning Broadway production of “Hamilton,” which tells the story of Alexander Hamilton’s relationships with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. These Virginians were among his most influential allies and his worst enemies.

Visitors will learn about Alexander Hamilton’s service as General George Washington’s right-hand man, his leadership at the Battle of Yorktown, his partnership with James Madison in writing the Federalist Papers, his impact as Secretary of the Treasury, and his infamous battles with Thomas Jefferson. The exhibit takes visitors from 1776—Washington discovers Hamilton; 1781 the World turned upside down; 1790-Financing a New Nation through 1804-the Duel; Burr and Hamilton.

The exhibit is open to the public. Review the Museum’s web site for hours. There is no charge for this exhibit.
