Fort Pocahontas Reenactment

Fort Pocahontas Reenactment

About

The May 24, 1864, victory of United States Colored Troops over attacking Confederate cavalry comes to life in the “Action at Wilson’s Wharf” at Fort Pocahontas on the James River. Each year we remember the contribution of USCTs to the Federal war effort and to the unfinished work of the American Revolution. Here USCTs were tested in battle and became symbols of strength and freedom for future generations.

Tour Civil War camps within the well-preserved fort to experience the life of a soldier in the 1860’s. Cavalry, artillery and infantry take part in a battle each afternoon. Family-friendly living history activities include a scavenger hunt, candle-making, a meet-and-greet with mounted cavalry, and period music and dance by Harken Back String Band. Sutlers offer reproductions of Civil War-era merchandise. Food by Dominion Dogs. Attendees are advised to dress comfortably for the weather. Lawn chairs are permitted. No pets.
The site is open to the public only during the reenactment. Group tours available by appointment.
