Foods & Feasts of Colonial Virginia at Jamestown Settlement

Foods & Feasts of Colonial Virginia at Jamestown Settlement

About

Long before microwaves, electric stoves and refrigerators, early Virginians prepared meals in clay pots and iron kettles and preserved food by smoking and salt curing. This Thanksgiving holiday, explore culinary practices and cooking techniques of the 17th and 18th centuries during Foods & Feasts of Colonial Virginia, during a two-day event, Friday and Saturday, November 28 and 29.

At Jamestown Settlement, discover how food was gathered, preserved and prepared on land and at sea by Virginia’s English colonists and Powhatan Indians. Enjoy cooking demonstrations throughout the day in re-creations of Paspahegh Town, a colonial fort and along the ships’ pier. Food preparation in the outdoor living-history areas is for demonstration purposes.

Jamestown Settlement invites visitors to discover America’s first permanent English colony, the cultures and traditions of the Virginia Indians, Europeans and West Central Africans. Get a firsthand look at history with interactive outdoor re-creations and innovative galleries featuring rare artifacts, hands-on exhibits and a 4D film.

The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Museum shops and cafe open during museum hours.

The event is included with general admission to Jamestown Settlement. Combine with admission to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown! A value-priced combination ticket offers seven days of unlimited admission when purchased online.

Residents of James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg, including William & Mary students, receive complimentary admission to both museums with proof of residency. Parking is free.
