Tidewater Winds Brass QuintetThe festive garden performance begins at 1 p.m. including pieces composed and performed for Lafayette during his Farewell Tour. Three museum interpreters, “The Men of the House,” add a theatrical element to the performance describing the Hill family’s connections to General Lafayette’s visit. Light refreshments will be served. In case of inclement weather, the 1 p.m. concert will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church - 424 Washington St. Portsmouth, VA 23704
Along with the lecture, the museum is open for tours noon to 3 p.m. which features beautiful period decorations including transparencies. These painted paper or fabric panels were used to decorate public spaces and the windows of private homes during Lafayette's Farewell Tour. Once illuminated from behind, they create a vibrant image for onlookers. Elegant china sets owned by the Hill family with authenticated ties to Lafayette's visit in 1824 are displayed in the family dining room.
