Visit the stately Hill House Museum in Portsmouth, Virginia’s historic Olde Towne district. Docents share new research that reveals connections between the Hill family ancestors, General Lafayette’s Portsmouth visit of 1824, and post-commemorative events.In honor of the bicentennial of Gen. Lafayette’s Farewell Tour, the museum features beautiful period decorations including transparencies. These painted paper and fabric panels decorated public spaces and the windows of private homes during Lafayette’s Farewell Tour. Once illuminated from behind, they create a vibrant image for onlookers. Elegant china sets owned by the Hill family with authenticated ties to General Lafayette’s Farewell Tour are displayed in the family dining room.
